Run Free, Run Simple: Why Minimalist Sandals Are Your Feet's New Best Friend

From the Spiti Half Marathon at 12,500 feet — a runner's case for going minimalist.

By our barefoot specialist

In June 2019, I slipped into my minimalist running sandals for the Spiti Half Marathon in Kaza, Himachal Pradesh. It was not my first run in minimalist sandals, but the most memorable one. Fresh from trekking the gruelling Pin-Parvati Pass, I felt ready for the thin air and the steep inclines — strong and acclimated. At 12,500 feet, it's a rugged, high-altitude challenge, mostly a good asphalt road maintained by the BRO, with some off-road sections & icy water crossings made by landslides, and seasonal nallas running across the tarmac, washing it away. I had trained hard on the slopes of Nandibetta in my minimalist sandals, and the 17,000-foot climbs of the trek had prepared me for this test of endurance.

The start line thrummed with vibrant energy — the locals, the army, and the runners mingling under prayer flags fluttering in the chilly breeze of the early morning Himalayan-June. As the race began, my feet glided over the dusty road, each step a gritty dance with Spiti's unforgiving terrain. Loose pebbles caressed my soles, and the freedom of feeling the earth, air and water on my feet fuelled me. Towering, barren peaks stood like silent appreciative giants, while my lungs burned in the oxygen-starved air. By the turnaround point, my legs were howling. My calves that were forged in the high mountain passes were being tested here. The ancient Kaza monastery of Key, its whitewashed walls glowing under the sun, beckoned me forward — "Om Mani Padme Hum" reverberated in the valley. Crossing the finish line, legs trembling, I collapsed into the crowds of cheering locals, their warm smiles and salty yak-butter tea reviving me. I had clocked a respectable time, my sandals were caked in ancient earth and had carried me through a race I would never forget.

Running in minimalist sandals is a sensory revelation, a return to natural motion. Unlike cushioned shoes that muffle the ground, sandals let you "feel" each step, sharpen your form, your toes splaying like roots to grip the earth. Studies on natural running show barefoot or minimalist running strengthens foot muscles, cutting injury risk by waking tendons and muscles dulled by years in padded sneakers. Minimalist running doesn't just build stronger legs — it reconnects you to the raw joy of movement, a legacy etched in our bones by the ancient tribal hunters who covered vast distances unshod.

Inspired by their huaraches, I crafted my own light, flexible, and durable minimalist running sandals, called Ōdoo Sandals ('odu' means 'to run' in Kannada). Every pair of these home-grown Ōdoos is hand-crafted in namma Bengaluru for this primal freedom, designed to make your running experience as electric and joyous as it can be. Imagine a footwear that melts away and becomes an extension of your feet, flexes with every stride, grips the ground like a second skin, and straps as soft as silk that hug and move with your feet through every twist and turn. Ōdoos don't bind, they liberate & enable, letting you feel the earth's pulse. Whether it's the breathable design that keeps your feet cool through sweaty miles or the grippy sole that steadies you on uneven patches, Ōdoos are your partner in rediscovering your running's roots, built for the long haul and the joy of every step.
